Want to learn more about Newton's public safety agencies? Or are you interested in a police or fire career? Sign up today for the 2022 Citizens Public Safety Academy.

The 2022 Citizens Public Safety Academy is a collaborative effort between the Newton Fire Department and Newton Police Department to provide real-world training and experience to the citizens of Newton. The academy begins on October 11 and finishes on November 15, 2022. The classes will be held every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Department operations for both Fire & Police
  • Firefighting
  • Defensive tactics
  • Non-lethal weapons
  • Arrest procedures
  • Technical rescue
  • Firearms
  • SWAT operations
  • Hazardous materials
  • Criminal & narcotics investigations
  • Forensics
  • Emergency Medical Services
  • Traffic and impaired driving enforcement
  • Motorcycle unit

How to apply:

Please note:

  • There is no fee to take part in the academy. 
  • All applicants must be at least 16 years of age or older to participate; a signed parental waiver is required if applicants are under the age of 18.
  •  A criminal records check will be conducted on all applicants prior to acceptance into the academy.
  • Participants must attend five (5) of the six (6) session to graduate from the academy.
