    In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

Proceeds to benefit Newton Diversity Alliance.

Mystery bags have a different theme every month and contain a surprise selection of 4-5 books and movies, an adult craft, and other treats. Return the books and movies when you're done with them - keep the other goodies! May's theme is "Famous Faces". The May bag will include a selection of biographies and fiction books about some of history's most interesting and well-known figures. The craft is a button monogram on canvas. Registration opens April 19th. Call the library at 641-792-4108 to register.

    Pay down your library fines with food! During the week of May 10th, the Newton Public Library will be accepting non-perishable food donations as payment for overdue library fines. Donations will not be accepted for missing or damaged items. Expired food will not be accepted. Donations will be given to the Salvation Army Food Bank in Newton. 1 item = $1.00 in fines.
