You might not know it, but Jasper County is full of ghost towns! Ghost towns in Iowa are not necessarily deserted buildings on a dusty Main Street. They are marked by the graveyard on the gravel road. The old church sitting alone. A bend in the road by the old farmhouse. Why are we curious about the people and places that came before us?
We will explore several examples of these lost places. How did Monroe City nearly become the capitol? Why did the railroad bring Turner to life but kill Greencastle? What is the story behind Wittenburg? How can we keep places like Ira and Valeria from becoming tomorrow's ghost towns? All of these questions and more will be discussed.
Dave Baker, writer and photographer for "Iowa The 29th State" has photographed over 10,000 communities, landmarks, historic sites, and places of interest in Iowa. Dave will show dozens of original photographs and will have a variety of artifacts pertaining to Jasper County history on display.
