  1. Book Character Pumpkin Decorating Contest

    October 18, 2019, 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM @ Newton Public Library

    Decorate a pumpkin or gourd as your favorite book character! Pumpkins may be painted, dressed, or accessorized, but not carved, and will be accepted for either Family/Classroom (Children receive help from adults) or Independent Child (Child makes pumpkin without adult assistance) categories. The public will vote for winners in all categories from October 23rd to October 30th. Winners will be announced October 31st. Winners will receive a Halloween treat basket.

  2. Winter Clothing Drive at the Library

    The Newton Public Library is collecting NEW cold weather clothing for children ages 6-18! Donated clothing will be given to Newton schools, to be distributed to local students in need. Examples of collected clothing include: New sweaters, sweatshirts, coats, mittens, hats, boots, and socks. Donations will be accepted at the library circulation desk, October 14th through 19th. We appreciate your donation!

    Join our Youth Services Librarian, Phyllis Peter, on Monday mornings for a special storytime designed for the youngest members of the family! Baby storytime provides a gentle and fun introduction to literacy through songs, stories, and finger plays. For newborns to 18 months with a parent or caregiver (siblings are welcome). Storytime begins at 10:30 am, then stay for play and social time after the program!

  10. Family History Workshop at the Library

    October 22, 2019, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM @ Newton Public Library

    Join trained Family History Specialists for a free family history course at the Newton Public Library! This course will provide an introduction to the basics of creating a personal family history. Topics will include gathering family documents, using online databases, and research tips. This introductory course will consist of four unique classes and participants should plan on attending all four classes. Class dates are: 10/08/19, 10/17/19, 10/22/19 & 11/5/19. One-on-one tutoring with a consultant will also be available during the course. Attendees should bring a charged laptop, if they have one. This program is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Please contact Public Services Librarian, Becca Klein at 641-792-4108 to register.

  15. Death Comes for Us All

    Victorians had a different attitude about death than we do in the 21st Century. People died at home surrounded by loved ones, families picnicked in cemeteries on Sundays, took photos with the deceased, and made jewelry from their hair. They also worried about being buried alive or someone stealing their bodies. Historian, Kathy Wilson explores the Victorians' fascination with death and the culture they developed to memorialize the dead. This program is free to attend and open to the public.
