This information is brought to you from Newton Housing Development Corporation and their partnership with Jasper County Habitat for Humanity.

Your home is your place. Somewhere to be comfortable, warm, and safe. To make memories, welcome friends and family, and feel like yourself. Home is important, and I know you want to remain in yours, safe and sound, for as long as possible.

When something isn’t right with your home – a struggling furnace, drafty windows, or crumbling steps, for example – the costs can be tremendous. The financial strain of paying for a major repair is out of reach for so many of us, straining our wallets, our patience, and our peace of mind.

If you can’t afford to make your home safe, comfortable, and stable again, how long can you continue to live in the place you’ve called home for so long? At Habitat for Humanity, our Home Preservation Program has one goal: helping you remain in your home for as long as possible. That’s why we call it “preservation!” We want to help preserve the lifestyle and independence you know, to help you preserve your dream of homeownership.

Repairs, such as replacing your furnace, stoop and steps, or windows, can make your home more accessible, comfortable, and efficient. Replacing non-working or inefficient appliances can save tons of money in the long term. Ensuring that your home is as well maintained as possible can help prevent more serious issues.

Habitat for Humanity’s home preservation program can help you make the repairs your home needs now, making expensive upkeep like a furnace replacement, new windows, roof repair, or accessibility ramp affordable. Our deferred, no-interest payment** uses the growth in your home’s value over time to cover the cost of your repair when you eventually sell your house. Using your home’s equity, you can cover the cost of your repair on your own time, even 20 years later – with no interest and no money out of your pocket.

** The deferred, no-interest payment is made in the form of a lien. This is a financial tool that ties a debt (in this case, the cost of your repair) to collateral (your house). You do not need to pay a Habitat lien until you sell your home. You may pay off your lien at any time using a lump sum payment. We do not accept installment or monthly payments. Habitat’s goal is always to help you maintain homeownership.

Homeowners are invited to apply for the program and are accepted based on their household income and assessed home value.

Repair services fall under four distinct categories:

  • Exterior Repairs (such as roofs and siding)
  • Critical Home Repair (such as furnaces and water heaters)
  • Weatherization (such as windows and insulation)
  • Accessibility (such as ramps, grab bars, and bath modifications)
