Digital Services at the Newton Public Library

digital library

Whether you are hitting the road or staying in, the Newton Public Library offers a great selection of digital services and materials, all of which are accessible from the comfort of your own home. We’ve compiled a list of the digital services that come with your library card.

Digital Library Cards

The library now offers digital library card registrations online! A digital library card is a temporary card that provides users with access to the full collection of digital library materials, including downloadable eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, and reference databases. These virtual cards are available to residents of Newton, Lambs Grove, and rural Jasper County. Visit the library website at www.newtongov.org/library to register for your digital card.

Digital Historic Newspapers

A portion of the library's newspapers on microfilm have been digitized and are available online. Newspapers including Newton Journal, Newton Daily Journal, Newton Herald, Newton Record, and Newton Daily News are keyword searchable through 1925, with more to come! Funding for the newspaper digitization project is provided by the Newton Public Library Foundation." Search the digital newspapers today at: newtonia.advantage-preservation.com, no library card needed!

Downloadable eBooks, audiobooks and magazines

Choose from thousands of downloadable eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines in our digital lending library. Getting started is easy! Download the free Libby by Overdrive app to your mobile device then log in using your library card number and account PIN. eBooks and audiobooks are also an excellent option for forgetful readers; digital books return automatically when your check out period has ended, and never incur overdue fines.

Mobile Hotspots

Check out a mobile hotspot for WI-FI access wherever you may need it! Mobile hotspots check out for seven days and can be renewed once, if available. Hotspots are available to Newton residents ages 18 and up who have had their library cards 90+ days.

Local History Online

Take a virtual trip down memory lane with the Newton Public Library’s digital archive. This online archive contains hundreds of historical books, photographs, and documents, all accessible from your home computer! The archive also includes entirely digitized Newton High School Yearbooks dating back to 1911. Visit the archive at www.newtongov.org/research.

Online Learning 24/7

Create a resume, or download free legal forms using your Newton library card. A variety of online databases are available anytime you need them through the library’s catalogs at www.newtongov.org/catalog.

If you are interested in more information about any of the services above, please contact Becca Klein, Public Services Librarian, at 641-792-4108.
