On December 2, City Council approved the submittal of an Airport Improvement Program (AIP) pre-application to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for proposed capital improvement projects at the Newton Airport.
The pre-application, which enables the FAA to plan for future project funding, includes anticipated or possible projects at the Newton Airport during the next five Federal fiscal years. The pre-application does not commit the City to fund or complete any of the listed projects. Because of this, specific project applications will be submitted to obtain federal funds should Council direct any of these projects to move forward.
Proposed projects included in the pre-application submittal include:
Federal funds generally pay up to 90% of the cost of airport projects after the project-specific applications are submitted and approved. Recently completed projects at the airport utilizing Federal funds include the relocation of the fueling system. Construction of a current FAA funded project to expand the existing apron space is under contract. It will begin in the spring of 2020.
