Mayor Michael L. Hansen

Michael L. HansenMichael L. Hansen, a dedicated public servant, was re-elected as the Mayor of the City of Newton in November 2019. This was his second consecutive term as Mayor, having been initially elected in November 2013. Prior to serving as Mayor, he held the position on an interim basis in November 2012 while serving as a council member for Ward 2.

Throughout his years of service, Mike has been actively involved in supporting the youth of Newton. He has served on the boards of Babe Ruth and Little League baseball, working to enhance the experiences of young athletes. Additionally, Mike has been an advisor for aviation and aquatic Explorer Scout posts, guiding and mentoring young individuals in these fields.

Mike's commitment to athletics goes beyond volunteering. He is a licensed sports official with the IHSAA (Iowa High School Athletic Association) and IGHSAU (Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union). As a member of the National Federation Officials Association (NFOA), he upholds the highest standards of fairness and integrity in officiating sports events.

Before his involvement in public service, Mike proudly served as a member of the US Army Special Forces stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. His military background reflects his dedication to duty and his commitment to serving others.

In his personal life, Mike treasures his family. He is a loving father to three daughters and enjoys the joys of being a grandfather to five grandchildren.
