On Oct. 7, 2014, Newton’s downtown was listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
The designation brings financial incentives for district building owners. Substantial renovations of historic buildings within a National Register district can receive state and federal historic preservation tax credits, which together can add up to 45% of renovation costs. The State Historic Preservation Office must approve the renovations, and the building must have retained its historic integrity (unfortunately, not all buildings in the district are considered historic) to qualify for the tax credit.
To find out if your building has retained its historic status, if you are considering a substantial renovation to your building, or would like more information, please call 792-5545 or visit Main Street’s office at 113 1st Ave. W.
