Education
The Newton Community School District is an excellent education system where the classes aren’t too big or small and are full of academic, athletic and artistic opportunities. Many community members take advantage of post-secondary opportunities through DMACC Newton Campus and Buena Vista University.
Recreation & Entertainment
From races to concerts in the park; from a downtown square to a drive-in theater; from dog parks to bike trails - Newton has something for everyone. Need some ideas?
- Iowa Speedway is home to three race weekends each summer and also hosts a variety of other events including concerts.
- Valle Drive-In is Iowa’s oldest and best drive-in theater. Open Memorial Day through Labor Day the drive-in shows a double feature every night.
- The Newton YMCA is a leading nonprofit in Jasper County committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
- Historic Maytag Park is home to Maytag Bowl, Fred Maytag Pool, basketball court, disc golf course, tennis courts, and the Hike & Bike Trail.
Arts & Culture
Newton is passionate in its support of the arts and local culture. This includes nearly 90 displays of public art (including sculptures and murals), a community theatre that performs several shows each year, talented local musicians and a historical museum that celebrates Newton’s history.

MercyOne Newton Medical Center located at 204 North 4th Avenue E (641-792-1273), is a fully owned hospital of MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center and a member of MercyOne Network. The campus in Newton has 48 beds and about 200,000 square feet of space. Attached to the hospital is a 50,000-square-foot medical office building containing local physician practices and the hospital’s physical medicine and rehabilitation center.
HIRTA (Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency) provides door to door transit services in Jasper County. All rides are open to the general public, including persons with disabilities. To schedule a ride call, 1-877-686-0029 or send an email.
RideShare connects commuters who live and work near each other so they can share rides. RideShare, a division of the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART), has several vans arriving in and departing from Newton. Newton is the county seat for Jasper County. For tax information, driver’s license, vehicle registration, and voter information, the County is also a great resource for new residents.
The City has a leash law and licenses are required for dogs and cats. Pet licenses may be obtained at the Newton Police Department with a valid rabies vaccination certificate.
The City’s outdoor warning sirens are tested the first Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. unless severe weather is indicated for the near future. The outdoor warning system is activated for tornado warnings, severe thunderstorms if winds in excess of 80 miles per hour are indicated, or if there is a significant hail of two to three inches in diameter.
