Fire Safety
Smoke Detectors
Smoke detectors should be installed on every level of your home, including outside your sleeping areas, and a smoke detector should be installed in each bedroom. The detectors should be of duel sensor technology to include both photoelectric and ionization detection. You can even install a combination of smoke and CO detectors to also protect you from CO. Please remember to change batteries in your detectors once a year. If you need help changing a battery, please call the Fire Department at (641) 792-3347.

Fire Extinguishers
Keep a five pound ABC Fire Extinguisher in your home in case of a small fire. Keep the extinguisher in a location that can easily be accessible in case of an emergency.
Extension Cords
Never use extension cords as permanent wiring. If you must use an extension cord, make sure it is the proper size for what you are using it for. Do not plug multiple cords in an outlet. Use a surge protector if a multiple outlets are needed.
Candles
Candles can be a great way to freshen up your home, but they can be very dangerous. According the NFPA, between 2005-2009, candles were responsible for over 12,800 fires and caused 136 civilian deaths. In 2011 the City of Newton had a fire fatality resulting from a fire caused by a candle. Make sure that you blow out the candles when you finish using them. Keep candles in away from papers, curtains and other items that can catch fire. Never leave candles unattended.
