Investigations Unit
The Investigations Unit is headed by a Sergeant and staffs one investigator. This unit is responsible for the investigation of all criminal cases going beyond the preliminary stages of investigation.

K9 Unit
The department’s current patrol dog is K9 Smokey, and he is handled by Officer Walker. K9 Smokey is a border collie mix and was a stray prior to being trained as a dual purpose narcotics dog.

MINE Task Force
The Mid Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Drug Task Force is a federally funded task force responsible for the detection and apprehension of persons or groups involved in the use and sale of illegal drugs.

Motorcycle Unit
The department’s motorcycle unit began in the fall of 2016 with the purchase of a Zero brand electric motorcycle in partnership with Alliant Energy’s Bright Ideas grant program.

Parking Enforcement

Patrol
The Patrol Division consists of four Lieutenants and 14 Police Officers. Annually, department personnel respond to over 15,000 citizen calls for service and investigate over 2,000 reported crimes.

Records Unit
The Newton Police Department Records Unit is responsible for central coordination and administration of department records, data entry, system storage, maintenance and retrieval functions.

School Resource Officer
The partnership with the NCSD in developing the School Resource Officer program began in 1994. The primary function of this officer is to serve as an intervention and prevention officer for students.

Identification Unit: Seized Property/Evidence
The Identification Unit employs a civilian Identification Technician who processes crime scenes to document, collect and preserve physical evidence.
