Holiday Events Happening in Newton

Newton, Iowa has tons of great events taking place during the holidays, and you're invited! Learn about activities including holiday markets, shopping events, performances, holiday movies, light displays and yes, even a visit from Santa and his reindeer. Check out a full listing of holiday events happening in our community in November and December!  

Maytag Park Holiday Lights

Every evening through Jan. 1, Dusk to 10 p.m. | Maytag Park, 301 S. 11th Ave. W.

Load up the car and bring the family to see thousands of twinkling lights and more than 50 lighted displays at Maytag Park Holiday Lights sponsored by Clemon-Maki Insurance and organized by the City of Newton and Friends of Newton Parks. Admission is free each evening. Santa will make a special visit 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 3, to hand out candy canes and collect new, unwrapped toys for kids in need. 

DMACC’s 6th Annual Holiday Celebration

Dec. 1, 5 - 7 p.m. | DMACC Newton Campus

Bring your children of all ages to help decorate an enormous gingerbread house.  Lots of activities including crafts, cookies decorating, hot cocoa, and a visit from Santa. Free to the public.

Jasper County Master Gardeners Evergreen Planter Workshop

Dec. 1, 6:30 p.m. | Legacy Plaza, 403 W. 4th St. N. Building 16

Enhance your holiday season by creating an evergreen planter for your home at this workshop. Master Gardeners will provide step-by-step instruction on how to build and layer your planter. Cost: $40 (to create one planter). Class size limited; register by calling 641-792-6433.

Newton Public Library’s December Mystery Bag

Dec. 1 | Newton Public Library, 100 N. 3rd Ave. W.

Mystery bags have a different theme every month and contain a surprise selection of 4 - 5 books (which you return when you’re done) and an adult craft (which you keep). The December theme is “Winter Wonderland” and includes a selection of holiday/winter themed novels and a flannel evergreen tree forest craft. Registration opens Nov. 14. Ages 18+. Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Elf in a Store Promotion

Jasper County Museum’s Tree-mendous Christmas Experience

Dec. 2 - Jan. 1; Friday & Saturdays, 5 - 8 p.m.; Sundays 1 - 4 p.m. | Jasper County Museum, 1700 S. 15th Ave. W.

The event returns bigger, brighter and better for its second year. The museum’s interior will be decked out for the holidays - you’ll find wreaths, seasonal decorations and more than 175 Christmas trees. Visit from 5 - 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 1 - 4 p.m. Sundays. Closed Christmas Eve. Admission is $5 per person, kids 7 and younger are free.

Newton Community Theatre presents “A Christmas Carol” The Musical

7:30 p.m. on Dec. 2, 3, 9 & 10; 2 p.m. on Dec. 4 & 11 | Newton Community Theatre, 1701 S. 8th Ave. E.

With an infuriated “Bah! Humbug!” Scrooge summates his feelings of Christmas tidings and charitable giving, but he’s forced to face his selfish ways when three ghosts on Christmas Eve lead him through his Past, Present and Future in this holiday musical. Tickets go on sale Nov.21, $18 for adults and $15 for youth.

MercyOne Newton Medical Center Annual Jingle For A Cure

Dec. 3, 9 a.m. | Legacy Plaza, 403 W. 4th St. N.

Put on your running or walking shoes and get ready to race in the MercyOne Newton annual Jingle For A Cure. Registration fee: $25 before Nov. 18, $30 after Nov. 18 includes a t-shirt* and a finisher’s medal. T-shirts are guaranteed for those who register before Nov. 18. All proceeds from the event will be donated to MercyOne Newton Cancer and Infusion care to support cancer services. Register online by clicking here.

Dollars for Scholars Tour of Homes

The Newton Dollars for Scholars event shows off beautiful and interesting homes in the city of Newton! The five homes on the tour this year include:

Reindeer Games at Legacy Plaza

Friends of Newton Parks & Park Centre’s Annual Breakfast With Santa Claus

Santa Claus is coming to town and he is serving up pancakes! Enjoy a morning of fun with sugar cookies decorating from DMACC Baking Program students, Christmas crafts with Friends of Newton Parks and a delicious breakfast served by Park Centre staff. Donations support Friends of Newton Parks.

Newton Main Street’s Winter Wonderland Vendor Market

Newton Main Street is hosting a holiday shopping event that will appeal to everyone. The Winter Wonderland Vendor Market will feature a variety of vendors from homemade items to nationally known products. Shop for everyone on your list and enjoy gift wrapping services too!

Free Movie! “Polar Express”

All aboard for the modern holiday favorite “Polar Express” and visit by Santa Claus. The free movie is sponsored by the Newton YMCA and MercyOne Newton Medical Center. Advanced tickets are recommended but not required.

The NHS Key Club collects new toys during the Newton vs. Pella basketball game to be distributed throughout Jasper County through the Salvation Army.

United Way of Jasper County’s Big Christmas Raffle

Drawing Tuesday, December 20

The raffle is back and ready for the holidays. Buy a ticket to support United Way of Jasper County and be entered for a chance to win thousands of dollars worth of prizes. Tickets are $20 each and the prize drawing is Dec. 20. More information: unitedwayofjaspercounty.org
