Welcome to Newton!

Newton is an active, “can-do” type of community which offers many opportunities for participation including city government, school activities, the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the library, Retired Senior Volunteer Program just to name a few.  We are very proud of our progressive city government, which in recent years has received numerous state awards as well as seven national awards from groups including the American Economic Development council, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the International City/County Management Association.

Please take advantage of the many attractions, which the Newton area has to offer including the Iowa Speedway, Jasper County Museum, Newton Public Library, YMCA/Community Center/Community Theater, Lake Red Rock and many other recreational opportunities.  Soon you will find as we have that Newton is a great place to live and enjoy.

Useful Information

Skiff Medical Center, located at 204 North t Avenue E (641-792-1273), is a municipal hospital governed by an independently elected Board of Hospital Trustees.  The Medical Center provides a broad range of services including a 24-hour emergency room; out-patient services, CAT scan, psychiatric care unit, public health and home care services and air ambulance for air emergency transport.

Newton is the county seat for Jasper County.  For tax information, driver's licensing, vehicle registration, and voter information, the County is also a great resource for new residents.

The City has a leash law and licenses are required for dogs and cats. Pet Licenses may be obtained at the Police Department with a valid rabies vaccination certificate. 

The City’s outdoor warning sirens are tested the first Wednesday of each month at 10:00 AM, unless severe weather is indicated for the near future.  The outdoor warning system is activated for tornado warnings, severe thunderstorms if winds in excess of 80 miles per hour are indicated, or if there is significant hail of two to three inches in diameter.  If you notice that a siren is not working properly please contact Newton Public Works at (641) 792-6622.
