Citizens Police Academy
The Newton Police Department's 2016 Citizens Police Academy is planned for Sept. 13 through Nov. 1.

The purpose of the academy is to provide an educational opportunity for citizens to learn first hand about police operations and to gain a deeper understanding of today’s law enforcement functions. Classes are held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday evening Sept. 13 through Nov. 1.

The eight-week class offers 24 hours of classroom and hands-on training in the following areas: firearms safety and shooting, traffic enforcement, arrest tactics, shoot/don't shoot scenarios, SWAT team/search warrants, hiring process/requirements, emergency driving training, defensive tactics, non-lethal weapon deployment, crime scene investigations, narcotics investigations and OWI enforcement.

Applications must be submitted to the Newton Police Department by Aug. 15. Applications are available at the police department, by emailing Janet Cox at or by printing the application using the link below.
