Newton Police Department Conducts SAFETY CITY Annually, the Newton Police Department offers SAFETY CITY for all kindergarten students. SAFETY CITY is a miniature city with streets, crosswalks, stop signs, traffic signals and buildings that allows students to experience various traffic situations in a safe and protected manner. The program teaches kindergarten children how to properly cross the street by remembering three key words, "Stop, Look, and Listen" as well as other safety tips. SAFETY CITY for 2009 was held September 19-23 at Aurora Heights Park with approximately 358 kindergarten students being served from seven elementary schools in Newton and Colfax. The event was coordinated by the Newton Police Department's Traffic Safety Officer, with assistance from other Newton Officers and Newton Senior High School student helpers. Each child was presented with a junior police badge from McGruff the Crime Dog and received a certificate for completing the SAFETY CITY course. |
