Fire Safety
www.NewtonGov.org
The Newton Fire Department is committed to providing a safe environment to all citizens,
through education and prevention. The department utilizes a safe house to teach children the
importance of having an evacuation plan at home, by taking the house to area elementary
schools each fall or when requested.

The Newton Fire Department has also taken a positive approach in its efforts to stop youth
firesetting in the community through our Junior Firesetter Intervention. The mission of the
program is to provide educational intervention for children and their families experiencing
problems with firesetting.
SAFETY INFORMATION
Program Steps

Referral to the program
A child can be referred to one of our Junior Firesetter Intervention Specialists in a number
of ways: by a parent, a teacher, the fire department, the police department, or the court
system, etc. This is a free service for children and their families. To schedule a meeting
please call (641) 792 - 3347 or email the training officer or fire marshal.

Education
The child and their family are seen by a fire educator for two sessions. The educator and
the child discuss the dangers and consequences of firesetting. The program educates
parents and children on the proper use of fire and fire safety.

Follow-up
Contacting the family either through mail or telephone is a necessary step in evaluating
the progress of the child.
Besides these programs, Newton Fire Department has other services to help educate the public, including
CPR and first aid instructors, fire service instructors, and information regarding rental inspections. Should
you have any questions, please feel free to click on the information tabs on the side or call the fire
department at 641 - 792 - 3347.
